Coffman Cove Community Information

History:
The site was named in 1886 by Lt. Comdr. A.S. Snow, USN, for Lt. Dewitt Coffman, a member of his party. Coffman Cove was first settled as a logging camp in the 1950s. Land was made available for private ownership through selection under the Alaska Statehood Act. The city incorporated in 1989. The local school and area logging for Ketchikan Pulp Co. and a small lumber mill provided the majority of employment, and Coffman Cove was one of the major log transfer sites on Prince of Wales Island, where logs were tied together and towed to trans-shipment points for export. Some mining operations throughout the island were another working source, among the ores mined on the island were gold, silver, zinc, lead uranium and palladium.
Today, the small community is primarily non-Native and the mainstays of the economy, for the few local residents, are fishing and tourism. The State Ferry lands at Hollis to provide access to the Prince of Wales Island road system. A State-owned seaplane base is available, and the nearest landing strip is in Klawock.

Coffman Cove is located at 56°0'44" North, 132°49'44" West (56.012137, -132.828840)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Coffman Cove Alaska has a total area of 38.5 km² (14.9 mi²). 26.9 km² (10.4 mi²) of it is land and 11.6 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 30.03% water.

Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there are 199 people, 63 households, and 42 families residing in the city. The population density is 7.4/km² (19.2/mi²). There are 99 housing units at an average density of 3.7/km² (9.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.44% White, 0.50% Black or African American, 2.51% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 5.03% from other races, and 4.02% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 63 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% are married couples living together, 4.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 32.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 168.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 180.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $43,750, and the median income for a family is $44,861. Males have a median income of $52,031 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,249. 4.9% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 21.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
