Craig Alaska Fishing and Charter Information

Roy Baylinson with Prince of Wales halibutSalmon is a word synonomous with Southeast Alaska and Prince of Wales Island. Huges runs of salmon migrate from the open ocean and into the protected waters of the Inside Passage around Prince of Wales Island. Nearby Ketchikan is actually known as the salmon capital of the world. This is because five species of salmon, including king (chinook), silver (coho), red (sockeye), pink (humpy), and chum (dog) salmon all congregate here in trophy sizes.

There is also excellent salt water fishing for halibut, red snapper, ling cod, and rock cod. Crab, shrimp, and shellfish including the world-famous Coffman Cove oysters are also harvested in the waters surrounding the island.

Lake and stream fishing using spinner and fly-rods is excellent as well. Expect to catch steelhead, dolly varden, grayling, rainbow and cutthroat trout. Due to the great size of our fresh water bounty, fly fishing is an excellent experience on P.O.W.

There are many ways to access the fishing opportunities here. Charter boats and captains abound in the waterside communities and remote fishing lodges range from rustic to four-star. Half, full, and multi-day charter trips are available. For more information on commercial fishing operations in and around Craig, Alaska, visit the POW Chamber of Commerce.

For a real adventure, try renting a Forest Service Cabin near or on one of the many lakes, rivers, or streams. For more information on remote cabins, contact the Tongass National Forest Service
